It’s been two years since Sky Blu, younger member of the dynamic electro-pop dance duo LMFAO, experienced a debilitating back injury that prohibited him from rocking the stage, but three herniated discs and a cracked vertebra aren’t enough to hold back this Grammy-nominated artist, DJ, singer-songwriter and producer. At first glance, Sky seems like a walking party; a wiggler and shuffler to the fans delivering nonstop club action to the masses, but look further beneath that party exterior and you will find a brilliant and passionate budding mogul with a distinct knack for artistic creation and a charitable heart just as big as his larger-than-life "party rock" persona. Born Skyler Austen Gordy in Los Angeles, California on August 23, 1986, Sky is grandson to Motown Records founder, Berry Gordy Jr., and nephew to LMFAO partner, Redfoo (Stefan Kendal Gordy). At age 19 he moved into his Uncle Stefan’s studio apartment in Hollywood, California and started his musical mentorship and collaboration. The duo created music and played it in clubs throughout the Los Angeles area. Foo was the DJ, and Sky the MC. In 2007, both Sky and Foo attended the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida. On April 1, 2007, LMFAO was born. They created both a sound and lifestyle that they called Party Rock. Sky’s maternal grandmother, Waltraud Robeson, aka Grandma Goodfoot, is responsible for giving LMFAO their name. In the summer of 2012 it was announced that Sky and his partner Red Foo were taking a hiatus to explore solo projects. Together the group has released two chart-topping albums. The first, “Party Rock,” debuted in 2009 and made the world go dance crazy with singles like, “I’m In Miami Bitch,” “La La La,” “Shots,” “Yes,” and “Get Crazy.” “Party Rock” garnered a 2009 Grammy® nomination for “Best Dance Album.” Their sophomore album, “Sorry for Party Rocking” (released in 2011) sealed the duo’s staying power. In 2012 it won the group six Billboard Awards, the second highest amount received during the night. The duo accepted awards for Hot 100 Song of the Year ("Party Rock Anthem") and for Top Duo/Group, beating out Maroon 5 and Lady Antebellum. “Party Rock Anthem” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for six consecutive weeks, and went #1 in over 19 countries. The video has garnered over 650,000,000 views on YouTube and sold over 7 million copies in the U.S. alone. The second single off this album, “Sexy and I Know It”, also went #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over 6 million copies and reaching over 280,000,000 video views on YouTube. In the 2012 Super Bowl, LMFAO performed alongside Madonna in the largest viewed Super Bowl in NFL history! The group has collaborations with many other artists as well, like The Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta, Pitbull, Katy Perry and Lil’ Jon to name a few. So what’s next for this 28 year-old superstar? Sky Blu currently holds a successful DJ residency at LIV at the Fontainebleau in Miami, Florida and, Mur Mur and MIxx at the Borgata in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Until now, his mission of making the world a better place is one known by few, but Sky’s charitable heart was growing at an early age. Even as a child, Sky felt a drive to help others. At 6-years old he performed a dance at the March of Dimes – Walk America with 5,000 participants walking. At age 7 he sang and danced at the famed Roxy on the Sunset Strip for a charity for Native Americans. Being raised among the Motown family his grandfather Berry Gordy, Jr. built, he understood the recipe for greatness as well as humility and kindness. It was a formula that he wanted to put into practice as he began envisioning his own success as an artist. Sky says, "It's not about feeling better than others, it's about feeling different." Sky donated over ten inches of hair to Locks of Love in 2012, a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis including hair loss due to cancer treatment. He is also passionately involved with the non-profit, Best Buddies, an organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Most recently, Sky lent his voice to a historic social media initiative titled Flash Flood For Good. Launched by President Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton, with the support of dozens of celebrities such as Sky Blu and including Jeff Bridges, Morgan Freeman, Scarlet Johansson, Pitbull, Celine Dion and many more, the initiative aggregates celebrity Twitter and Facebook feeds so that over 1 billion people can be reached at the same time on September 24, 2013. The initiative, dubbed “We Are The Digital World,” is an effort to bring clean water to the children of Myanmar, Ethiopia and Rwanda. The pop star expects to continue fulfilling his ultimate humanitarian goals through a new and exciting company, Big Bad. Through the execution of various projects, its main focus and mission is philanthropy. The company is filled with great talent; Sky Blu, Shwayze, Chelsea Korka (formally of the Paradiso Girls) and Mark Rosas, a writer, singer and a highly acclaimed music producer. Big Bad is initially concentrating on developing music artists, DJ’s, TV series and a highly interactive fan social media format. Like Sky, “Big Bad” exemplifies being self-confident, strong, charitable, and consciously aware. It is about using your spirit and your dedication to improve the world through entertainment and philanthropy. Fresh off the heels of a concert tour in Central America, South America, Mexico and Dubai, the collective released their first single, #Sexsong in fall of 2012. True to their mission, all proceeds of #Sexsong go to Lifebeat, Music Fights HIV/AIDS, a national non-profit organization dedicated to reaching America’s youth with the message of HIV/AIDS prevention. Sky Blu is living up to his promise of the past year, thundering into 2014 with new music. It is no surprise that the creative vision behind the “Party Rock” movement, that penetrated global pop culture, would thunder into the new year with a plan to topple that conquest. Meet Sky Blu, the “Party President.” The “Party Rock” lifestyle was a LMFAO created movement. Although Sky Blu isn’t leaving LMFAO behind, the “Party President” is all Sky Blu. The “Party President” is here to inspire the world to have fun,” Sky jokes. Such a general statement can almost sound silly. But, Sky is serious. He really does believe that healing can be found in embracing life. Indeed behind the party, there’s a deeper meaning. Yes, it’s a fun similar movement to the “Party Rock” lifestyle, but Sky wants the world to get to know him better. That will include a glimpse into Sky Blu’s personal life. Over the past few years, Sky has embraced a cleaner healthier lifestyle complete with a more positive focus on nutrition and fitness. No man is singular, however. Sky Blu certainly isn’t. So while he’s focusing on becoming healthier, he’s still the life the party. Thomas Merton wrote, “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” The “Party President” is Sky Blu’s transportation to that destination. “Every aspect of what I’m trying to do with the ‘Party President’ will be all Sky Blu; All me. From the live show to social media and from creative projects whether they be for television or through my music will be delivered through Sky Blu, the ‘Party President.’ In short, this is my first commercial brand after LMFAO,” Sky explains with purpose. Sky Blu, the “Party President,” indeed presented his fans with his first solo work this past year. His first official single, “Pop Bottles,” lit up the nightlife scene all over the country last year. Salud,” a Latin themed song featuring friends Sensato, Reek Rude and Wilmer Valderrama is an undeniable anthem. At the 2013 Latin Billboard Awards, Sky shared the red-carpet with his fellow compatriots featured on “Salud” and witnessed his two-year labor of love finally born into existence. As MTV.com put it, “Sky Blu keeps the party rocking in this solo debut.” Blu’s solo debut album Rebel Music was released on July 4, 2013, Independence Day. The current singles, “Pop Bottles,” and “Salud” are available at iTunes. Sky Blu released this album for free to his fans through online distribution. A consummate creative, Sky Blu is constantly producing and writing new music. Releasing this album for free allowed him the opportunity to break the bonds of a traditional release schedule. He recently explained this decision to MTV News saying, “What’s good for you is following your heart. What’s good for you is creating music and making people happy. That’s what I want to do. I learned money; that ain’t the ticket. That’s why this album’s for free.” The album is currently available at www.bigbad.com. Most recently, Sky Blu released a new single to kick off his “Party President” movement. “Go on Girl” debuted with a live performance on the Arsenio Hall Show and is available now at iTunes. Sky and Big Bad University are currently on tour, performing in selected major cities worldwide.
